Accessible Holidays to the Canary Islands
Escape to the Canary Islands
Let us show you how it Can be Done
We love to send disabled travellers on holidays of a lifetime to the Canaries for the simple reason that this collection of sun-soaked islands is refreshingly progressive when it comes to providing access to its fantastic beaches, restaurants, cultural life and natural phenomena.
Lanzarote is home to the Yaiza Accessibility Programme, whose motto sums up much of the attitude amongst the islands: “Yaiza accesible, Yaiza sostenible”. From the major urban centres to the tiny fishing villages, efforts are being rolled out to offer written material in Braille, wheelchair friendly facilities and audiovisual content with sign language in restaurants and tourist attractions.
When you talk to our travel experts they will have no hesitation in recommending many of the beach resorts in the Canary Islands as ideal for disabled travellers. Many beaches have accessible toilets and changing facilities; there are beach wheelchairs in the major resorts and pedestrianised sea promenades. In fact, the longest barrier-free promenade in Europe can be found at Los Cristianos, stretching a distance of 7km.
A holiday in the Canary Islands doesn’t have to be exclusively about sun loungers and swimming pools. There are many high-octane activities on offer for handicapped visitors. On Tenerife, the Ademi Tenerife centre is an institute dedicated to disabled sports – you can try out archery and fencing or work on your swimming and tennis techniques.
If you’re looking for diving, then the Costa Teguise Daivoon Diving School has instructors who specialise in teaching the disabled.
For the younger crowd, the theme parks in the Canaries are world renowned. Loro Parque is highly recommended by our travel specialists for the facilities are all accessible to wheelchair users and the whole family can enjoy the shows, the children’s playground and the natural habitats preserved for the parrots and orchids.
When it comes to disabled holidaymakers who crave spectacular views and an up close and personal brush with nature, we always put the Canary Islands at the top of the list.
Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park is a volcanic paradise and leads the way among accessible parks. The educational material in Braille in many languages and audiovisual guides that incorporate sign language are just two examples of how inclusive an experience this park can offer. Similarly, Teide National Park over on Tenerife has a guide service for the disabled which gives all visitors an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views and unique biodiversity of the region.
